Various organizations have called a bandh in Bengaluru on September 26, Tuesday, demanding the state government not to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. He urged the government to call a special assembly session to discuss the Cauvery dispute. More than 15 organizations including the Aam Aadmi Party, several civic welfare associations and pro-Kannada organizations participated in the meeting on the bandh.

On Saturday, various groups protested in Bengaluru over the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu and tried to stop traffic at many places. The Karnataka government on Friday decided to accept the Supreme Court order and release water to Tamil Nadu.

This decision has already been taken in the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The Supreme Court had on September 21 refused to interfere with the Cauvery Water Management Authority’s order to release 5,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu.

Today, various organizations protested in Mandya against the state government’s decision to release water to Tamil Nadu. The Karnataka government had argued before the Supreme Court that due to lack of rain in the state, the Karnataka government could not release Cauvery water.

In a meeting held in Delhi, CM Siddaramaiah said that the state received 73% less rainfall in August. The state cabinet on Friday approved the proposal to seek relief from the National Disaster Response Force in 195 taluks declared drought-affected. Based on the crop loss survey, the state government said that 161 taluks are facing severe drought and 34 taluks are facing moderate drought.

Former MLA and pro-Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj held a meeting of various organizations in the city on Monday and decided the date to hold a strike in Karnataka, after Karnataka Water Conservation Committee President Kuruburu Shanthakumar announced a bandh on September 26.

The bandh was called in the wake of the state government’s decision to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. After Shanthakumar announced a bandh in the city, Vatal Nagaraj announced a meeting of various organizations on Monday, causing confusion. The two leaders have decided to hold a meeting and take a final decision on Monday. However, Shanthakumar has maintained that the bandh called on September 26 will not be withdrawn.
