PM Modi calls for ‘janata curfew’ on March 22, says social distancing key to fight menace

Delhi: In his televised address to the nation on Thursday evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for a ‘janata curfew’ on Sunday, March 22 as he stressed on the importance of social distancing in country’s fight against the menace of Coronavirus. At a time when the COVID19 infection has claimed 4 lives and affected over 170 people across the country, PM Modi requested people to avoid visiting hospitals for routine checkups. The government led by the Finance Minister has a decided to constitute a Covid-19-Economic Response Task Force, PM Modi said while stressing that the diseases has impacted country’s economy too.

Earlier, a 70-year-old man, who had returned from Germany via Italy to Delhi, passed away in Punjab on Thursday, taking the total number of death due to Coronavirus in India to 4. The number of those affected by the virus has crossed 170 in India. Meanwhile, the government has also announced that no commercial international flights will be allowed to land in India from Sunday, March 22 for a week as cases of Coronavirus continue to rise in the country. In developments today, the University Grants Council (UGC) asked universities to postpone exams till March 31. Also, CBSE, ICSE board class 10,12 exams have been postponed till March 31. In view of the COVID-19 outbreak, Sebi has given a 45-day extension to companies for filing Q4 results this is a month-long grace for filing FY20 results due to coronavirus pandemic.

In India, Coronavirus cases climbed to 173 on Thursday after 18 new cases were reported from several states. Four people have succumbed to the infection so far.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, the Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said that 276 Indians have been infected from coronavirus abroad  of which 255 are in Iran, 12 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), 5 in Italy, and one each in Sri Lanka, Rwanda, Kuwait, and Hong Kong.

As the Indian Army recorded its first COVID-19 positive case  a 34-year-old soldier of Ladakh Scout who tested positive after coming in contact with his father, who returned from a pilgrimage in Iran the army announced the suspension of training activities, wargames and conference in an effort to further strengthen its check and coronavirus prevention mechanism.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan reviewed the preparedness in hospitals with regards to the availability of testing kits, isolation wards, medicine, and protective equipment.

The Indian Railways informed that 60 per cent tickets have been cancelled so far in March so far due to the threat of coronavirus.
