IRCTC to stop on-board food services on trains

Delhi: Indian Railways’ catering arm Indian Rail Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has decided to stop providing foods in the trains from 22 March until further notice.

The decision was taken as a precautionary measure to stop the spreading of coronavirus infection. IRCTC has also decided to take a slew of measures which will be implemented from the same date and all food plazas, refreshment rooms, Jan Aahars and cell kitchens to be closed. LiveMint Reported.

However, all static units supplying meals to the prepaid trains which are in operation may continue to operate.

In a statement from the IRCTC, it said that, If there is demand of On-Board Services then only PAD (Propriety Article Depot) items, tea and coffee may be allowed to be sold in the train. Such operation should be conducted using minimum staff. IRCTC also advised that the licensee should be requested to take care of their catering staff on humanitarian ground during this period of closure.

Earlier, the railways on Tuesday directed the Indian Rail Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and the zonal managers to take preventive measures on catering establishments. A number of trains have been cancelled in the wake of coronavirus scare.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in India has now climbed up to 223, including 32 foreigners, the Union Health Ministry said on Friday.
