Heavy to Very heavy rainfall in these 5 states for next 2 days

Over the weekend, the northeast monsoon season finally picked up pace and lashed several parts of Tamil Nadu even the districts that had previously evaded the wet conditions, including state capital Chennai.

Now, this rain spell is set to prevail through the first week of November, as more heavy showers have been forecast not just over Tamil Nadu, but its neighbouring South Indian states as well. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), isolated heavy rains have been forecast across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe, South Interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam and Rayalaseema over the course of the next five days.

Telangana and Coastal Karnataka will also experience similar conditions from Tuesday to Thursday, November 2-4. Furthermore, very heavy downpours are on the horizon over south interior and coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal on Monday and Tuesday, November 1-2, and over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam on just Monday.

As per The Weather Channel’s met team, the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh could get particularly drenched, while Lakshadweep will also see an increased rainfall activity during the first half of the week. In view of these predictions, the IMD has issued an orange alert (‘be prepared’ for rough weather) over the states that are in for very heavy showers. The other states, which may witness heavy rainfall, have been placed on a yellow watch (‘be aware’ of local weather situation).

These conditions will be caused by a low-pressure system located over Sri Lanka, off the Tamil Nadu coast, along with its associated cyclonic circulation. The system is likely to persist over this region for the next two days, and move westwards thereafter. Moreover, the lower-level easterly winds over north peninsular India are also expected to strengthen from Tuesday, November 2 onwards, contributing to the overall rainfall activity.

Meanwhile, owing to the delayed withdrawal of the southwest monsoon season and a wet start to the northeast monsoon period that began immediately after, many South Indian states recorded above-average precipitation through October 2021. Between October 1-31, Kerala received 589.9 mm rainfall—a whopping 94% higher than its average for the month, and also the highest for October in the last 120 years!

Tamil Nadu (228 mm) and Karnataka (194.6 mm) also registered 29% and 48% ‘excess’ rain figures as compared to their respective October averages. But on the flip side, both Andhra Pradesh (118.8 mm) and Telangana (591 mm) experienced ‘deficient’ precipitation through the month.
