A passenger train collided with a cargo train in Greece’s Tempe, killing 32 people and injuring at least 85 more.32 people were killed and at least 85 were injured after a passenger train collided with an oncoming cargo train in Greece on the intervening night between Tuesday and Wednesday. Several train coaches got derailed and at least three caught fire after the crash which took place in Tempe. Konstantinos Agorastos, the governor of the Thessaly region, told local news agency Skai TV that the collision was “very strong”. He added that the first four coaches of the passenger train derailed, while the first two coaches were “almost completely destroyed”.

Agorastos said around 250 passengers have been evacuated safely. Around 350 people were travelling on the train, citing local media.In a televised address, fire service spokesman Vassilis Varthakoyiannis said the evacuation process is underway. He added that the rescue efforts were hindered by the severity of the collision between the two trains.

Rescuers wore head lamps to see through the thick smoke and pulled out pieces of mangled sheet metal from the crashed rail cars to search for people trapped under the debris. Governor Agorastos said cranes will be brought in to clear the debris and lift the rail cars. “There’s debris flung all around the crash site,” he added. Government officials said the army has been contacted to assist in the rescue.
