Mangaluru : In a swift operation, the Mangaluru police have arrested two interstate burglars within 20 hours of a major theft at an apartment complex in Lalbagh Hat Hill. The burglars had looted around ₹20 lakh worth of gold ornaments, ₹5,000 cash, 3,000 Dirhams, and a mobile phone from three flats on Sunday night.
The complaint was filed by Riyaz Rashid, a resident of the building, following which senior officers, Urwa police personnel, a dog squad, and fingerprint experts visited the spot and launched a coordinated search.
Acting on credible intelligence, the Urwa police team traced and arrested the two accused in Bengaluru early Tuesday morning with the support of Bengaluru City Police. The arrested are Abhijit Das (24) and Deba Das (21), both hailing from Meherpur in Assam.
Police recovered all stolen items including gold jewellery, ₹5,000 in cash, 3,000 Dirhams valued at ₹70,000, and the stolen mobile phone.
Investigations revealed that Abhijit Das is a habitual offender involved in multiple house burglary cases in Bengaluru and Assam. Both suspects were produced before the court and have been remanded to police custody for further interrogation, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said.
Police are now probing their involvement in other similar thefts across Karnataka and neighboring states.
