Bengaluru : A tragic road accident on the Tumakuru-Bengaluru National Highway claimed two lives and left three others seriously injured on Thursday. The incident occurred near H. Begur in Nelamangala taluk when a family car collided with a lorry that suddenly braked in front of it.
The car was carrying a family from Ron taluk in Gadag district, who were en route to Narayana Hospital in Bengaluru. According to police reports, the lorry ahead abruptly applied brakes, causing the family car, which was following closely, to crash into the rear. The impact was severe, leaving the car mangled beyond recognition.
Among the five passengers, 60-year-old Shivalinga Gowda and 55-year-old Prameela tragically lost their lives at the scene. The remaining three passengers sustained serious injuries and were immediately admitted to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care. Authorities confirmed that their condition is critical but stable following initial treatment.
Nelamangala traffic police rushed to the site immediately after receiving information about the accident. They conducted a thorough on-site investigation to determine the sequence of events and gather evidence. Preliminary findings indicate that the sudden braking by the lorry triggered the collision, though further investigation is ongoing.
The lorry driver has been taken into police custody, and a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act and Indian Penal Code. Legal proceedings are underway to ascertain responsibility and enforce accountability for the accident.
Police officials have urged drivers to maintain safe distances, particularly on busy highways, and exercise caution to prevent similar tragedies. Authorities also emphasized the importance of adhering to speed limits and road safety rules, especially during inter-district travel involving families.
The accident underscores ongoing concerns about highway safety in Karnataka. The Tumakuru-Bengaluru route is one of the busiest in the state, with frequent incidents caused by reckless driving and sudden maneuvers by heavy vehicles. Traffic authorities have called for stricter enforcement of safety protocols and increased vigilance by drivers to reduce road mishaps.
Family members of the victims have been informed, and local authorities are providing necessary support. The investigation continues, with police reviewing CCTV footage, eyewitness accounts, and vehicle conditions to determine the exact cause of the crash.
