Stampede during saree distribution event in Tamil Nadu: 4 women killed,11 injured

Four women were killed and many others were injured in a stampede during a saree distribution event in Vaniyambadi area of Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppattur. The stampede occured after a crowd gathered to receive tokens for the collection of free ‘Veshtis’ and sarees being distributed on the occasion of Thaipusam. “Four women died in a stampede where many people had gathered to receive tokens for the collection of free ‘Veshtis’ and sarees being distributed by an individual on the occasion of Thaipusam in Tiruppattur’s Vaniyambadi,” Thirupathur police officials were quoted

Police said no permission was granted to organise the event and the agency was probing the matter. “We are investigating this matter and action will be taken in accordance with the law. No permission was given to hold this event. Probe underway,” SP Thirupathur said.

Four elderly women were killed and 11 others were injured in a stampede near Vanniyambadi in Tirupattur district of Tamil Nadu.The stampede occurred during a saree distribution event. According to police, a large number of people had gathered to collect tokens to get free sarees and veshti (vests) distributed by a man identified as Aiyappan ahead of ‘Thaipoosam’ festival.Thaipoosam is a festival celebrated by the Hindu Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai.

The rush for collecting free sarees and vests was such that it led to a stampede, killing four elderly women while many others were injured and lost consciousness.Locals were seen splashing water on the faces of those who lost consciousness even as ambulances reached the spot to rush the injured to the hospital. Further investigation is underway.
