Smugglers throw gold worth 10.5 crores into the sea in Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu

Madurai: There was a rare incident where thieves who were smuggling gold from Sri Lanka to India threw gold worth crores of rupees into the sea to escape from the police. Indian Coast Guard, Revenue Intelligence Department of Chennai conducted this operation jointly and police have arrested three people in connection with the incident. The arrested have been identified as 30-year-old Nagoor Kani and 22-year-old Saguber Sadik, residents of Mandapam, and 29-year-old Mohammad Sameer, a resident of Marakayarpattinam. He has been handed over to Marine Police, Mandapam for further questioning. Gold worth 10.5 crores weighing 17.74 kg has been seized from the arrested.

Coast Guard personnel of Coast Guard Station Mandapam in Ramanathapuram district intercepted his boat on suspicion. At this time, these Khadeems have thrown so much valuable gold into the sea. Immediately the Coast Guard  personnel sent scuba divers into the sea and they succeeded in finding gold in the seabed. 

Earlier, the officials of the Revenue Intelligence Department, who were in disguise, got a tip-off that gold was being smuggled from Sri Lanka to Mandapam beach. Therefore, he requested the Coast Guard personnel of Mandapam to increase surveillance on the sea shore. The porous sea here with numerous sand dunes and shallow seas is easily exploited by drug and gold smugglers. In the meantime due to the economic crisis faced in Sri Lanka (Sri lanka) apart from recently banned items, beedi leaves, clothes, fertilizer and medicines are also being smuggled.

In this background, the Coast Guard staff had formed a joint team in collaboration with the Department of Revenue Intelligence and assigned a boat to control smuggling. On Wednesday night, this interceptor boat stopped and checked a suspicious boat. But he did not find any prohibited items in the boat. Immediately after realizing the intention of the thieves, the police sent scuba divers into the sea on the suspicion that they might have thrown it into the sea.

These scuba divers have managed to bring back the gold that was stolen by thieves from the sea floor. A total of 17.74 kg of gold was seized in this stolen goods including gold bars, biscuits, small pieces etc.
