Lecturer ends life after harassment by husband’s family in Doddaballapur

Bengaluru ;In a shocking incident, a young lecturer allegedly ended her life by jumping into the Vishweshwarayya Pickup Dam in Doddaballapur taluk after enduring months of harassment from her husband and in-laws. The deceased has been identified as Pushpavathi (30), who was married to Venu of Tapassihalli just 11 months ago.

According to police, Pushpavathi recorded a video statement before taking the extreme step, detailing the mental and physical harassment she faced. Her family had earlier lodged a missing complaint at the Doddaballapur Women’s Police Station after she went untraceable.

In the video, Pushpavathi accused her husband and in-laws of demanding dowry and pressuring her to bring money and a residential site from her parents. “From the day I entered the house, my husband distanced himself from me and refused to live as a family. When I asked him about having a child, he abused me and said I should go to his younger brother if I wanted one,” she said.

She further alleged that her mother-in-law and father-in-law supported the harassment, often using filthy language and even assaulting her. “Two weeks ago, they all attacked me, dragged me around the house and injured me. When I said I would go to the police, my father-in-law warned me that I would never be allowed back,” she stated in her recording.

Pushpavathi’s brother reportedly went to question the in-laws, but was also assaulted. A complaint was then filed at the Doddaballapur police station.

Police have registered a case of abetment to suicide and dowry harassment against her husband Venu and his family. Further investigation is underway.

The tragic incident has sparked outrage, reigniting concerns about dowry-related abuse and mental torture of educated women in the state.
