Police identified the accused as Aftab Amin Poonawalla. He had been in a live-in relationship with the victim, 26-year-old Shraddha. During questioning, Poonawalla revealed that Shraddha had been pressuring him to get married. They would frequently quarrel about it. Following an argument on May 18, Poonawalla strangled his partner.

He then dismembered her body with a sharp weapon and over the course of several days, he disposed of the pieces at various locations around Delhi.The victim’s father, Vikas Madan, had lodged an FIR for the kidnapping of his daughter at the Mehrauli police station in Delhi on November 8. In his complaint, Vikas stated that he lives with his family in Maharashtra’s Palghar. His daughter Shraddha worked at a call centre in Mumbai, where she met Poonawalla.

The two eventually got into a relationship and moved to Delhi, despite opposition from Shraddha’s family. The couple rented a flat in the Chhatarpur area. However, after May 2022, Vikas said that he received no word from his daughter, nor could he contact her.
