15 people dead, several feared trapped after walls collapse in Mumbai’s Chembur

Mumbai: Fifteen people were killed on Sunday in two different incidents of wall collapse in Mumbai’s Chembur and Vikhroli areas. Twelve people lost their lives after the wall of a house collapsed in the Vashi Naka area of Mumbai’s Chembur on the intervening night of July 17 and July 18 at around 1 am.

The wall collapsed due to a landslide, said National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Rescue operation is underway. The injured have been taken to the hospital. In Vikhroli, three people have died and two have been admitted to a hospital. Three hutment dwellers were killed as five shanties collapsed after a landslide following incessant overnight rains in Mumbai’s Vikhroli suburb at 2.30 am, a civic official said.

Two persons were injured and were sent to a nearby hospital, he added. NDRF Deputy Commandant Ashish Kumar, “Three bodies have been recovered and five-six more people are feared trapped in the debris of the building that collapsed in Vikhroli area following incessant rainfall in Mumbai.”
