The Second National Judicial Pay Commission has recommended that the salaries of judicial officers should be increased and implemented soon. Considering a petition filed by the All India Judges’ Association, the Supreme Court while delivering its judgment on 27 July 2022 said that judicial officers do not come under any commission constituted by the government, hence their pay scale should be increased.

The application was submitted by the Central and State Govt

Following the Supreme Court’s direction, a review petition was filed by the Center and some states, against which the Supreme Court dismissed the petition. The order of 27 July 2022 is upheld. A division bench comprising CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice Krishna Murari and Justice Hima Kohli said that no error was apparent before the record. In such a situation, the salary of judicial officers should be increased on the recommendation of the commission.

The Supreme Court also ordered to pay the arrears.

The Supreme Court directed the central and state governments to pay the dues in three instalments. 23 percent in the first installment, followed by 23 percent after three months and the entire balance due by June 2023.
