CJI DY Chandrachud: DY Chandrachud sworn in as the 50th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

New Delhi: Chief Justice Chandrachud is the son of late YV Chandrachud who was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for 7 years. Justice DY Chandrachud took oath as the 50th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India today. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath in a ceremony to be held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. DY Chandrachud took oath as the CJI today after the tenure of Justice UU Lalit, who was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, ended.  DY Chandrachud…Born on November 11, 1959, Justice Chandrachud was appointed as a Justice of the Supreme Court on May 13, 2016.DY Chandrachud’s father Justice YV Chandrachud was the 16th Chief Justice of India from 2 February 1978 to 11 July 1985. Justice Chandrachud is the son of late YV Chandrachud who was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for 7 years.

Justice DY Chandrachud will serve as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for the next 2 years i.e. till November 10, 2024.Chandrachud succeeded Justice UU Lalit, who was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for a short period of only 74 days.Justice Chandrachud is the 50th CJI. Supreme Court Justices retire at the age of 65.

Justice Chandrachud is the second most senior judge of the Supreme Court.He was the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court from October 31, 2013 until his appointment to the Supreme Court.Justice Chandrachud was a Judge of the Bombay High Court from March 29, 2000 until his appointment as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.

Justice Chandrachud has been part of several Constitution Benches and landmark judgments including the Ayodhya land dispute and right to privacy. As such, he was part of the Benches that delivered decisive judgments on Section 377 of the IPC, the validity of the Aadhaar scheme and the criminalization of same-sex relations by partially striking down the Sabarimala issue.A bench headed by Justice Chandrachud passed several orders to alleviate the hardships faced by the people during the Covid crisis.

Justice Chandrachud holds an undergraduate degree in Economics from St. Stephen’s College. Later he completed LLB from Delhi University. He holds a doctorate from Harvard Law School, USA. He has practiced law in the Supreme Court and the Bombay High Court. Supreme Court Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit (UU Lalit) recommended DY Chandrachud as his successor on 11 October.
