WhatsApp Tests New Noise Cancellation Feature for Clearer Calls Amid Traffic and Crowd

WhatsApp beta for Android introduces a real-time noise cancellation feature, filtering background sounds during voice and video calls to enhance call clarity and overall user experience

WhatsApp is testing a new noise cancellation feature aimed at improving call quality for users in noisy environments. The feature, currently available to a limited set of Android beta users, reduces background sounds such as traffic, wind, and crowd noise during voice and video calls, making conversations clearer and easier to follow.

According to WABetaInfo, the feature has been spotted in WhatsApp beta version 2.26.14.1 for Android. It is designed to be active by default, automatically filtering background noise when a call starts. Users can choose to disable it during a call if they feel it is over-filtering the audio.

This noise cancellation only processes the outgoing audio from the device, meaning the other party hears a clearer version of your voice. However, if the person on the other end does not have the feature active, their audio will not be enhanced. For optimal performance, both participants need to have the feature enabled on their devices.

WhatsApp has implemented the feature to operate entirely on the device itself. The microphone captures audio, applies the noise filter locally, and then encrypts the signal before sending it, ensuring that end-to-end encryption is not compromised.

Development of this feature was first observed in March during testing of beta version 2.26.11.8. WhatsApp is now rolling it out to more beta users for further testing. In the coming weeks, the company plans to expand access to a wider audience, with a stable release expected once testing is complete.

This update represents WhatsAppโ€™s ongoing efforts to enhance communication quality and make voice and video calls more reliable, even in noisy or crowded settings.
