India Sees Surge in Mobile Data Usage as Average Monthly Consumption Hits 31GB
Rising use of AI apps, 4K streaming, and cloud gaming drives sharp increase in mobile data consumption across India while 5G adoption continues to expand rapidly nationwide

India’s mobile data consumption has reached a new high, reflecting the country’s rapidly evolving digital habits. According to the latest report from Nokia, the average user in India is now consuming around 31GB of mobile data every month, marking a significant jump from previous years.
The growth has been largely driven by the increasing popularity of data intensive applications. From AI powered tools to high resolution 4K video streaming and cloud gaming platforms, users are relying more heavily on mobile internet for both work and entertainment. This shift is reshaping how data networks are being used across the country.
The report highlights that average monthly consumption has risen from 27.5GB in 2024 to 31GB in 2025, indicating a steady upward trend. At the same time, 5G adoption is accelerating, with data traffic on 5G networks witnessing a growth of over 70 percent. In 2025 alone, 5G traffic reached nearly 12.9 exabytes, accounting for about 47 percent of total mobile broadband usage.
Urban areas continue to dominate 5G usage, contributing around 58 percent of overall traffic. However, the expansion is not limited to metro cities. Smaller towns and emerging regions across A, B, and C categories are also witnessing a rapid rise in 5G adoption, signaling a broader digital transformation.
India’s total mobile data traffic has crossed 27 exabytes per month, reflecting a strong compound annual growth rate over the past five years. This surge has positioned the country among global leaders in mobile data consumption, supported by one of the largest 5G subscriber bases in the world. India also ranks among the top markets for fixed wireless access users globally.
Another key factor behind this growth is the expanding device ecosystem. The number of active 4G devices in the country reached approximately 892 million in 2025. Out of these, more than 380 million devices are already compatible with 5G networks, enabling faster adoption as coverage improves.
The smartphone market is also playing a crucial role. Around 90 percent of smartphones sold during 2025 supported 5G connectivity, showing a clear shift toward future ready devices. This widespread availability of compatible hardware is expected to further boost data usage in the coming years.
With increasing dependence on digital services and faster network rollout, India’s data consumption trend shows no signs of slowing down. The combination of affordable smartphones, expanding 5G coverage, and rising demand for high quality content is continuing to push the boundaries of mobile internet usage across the country.
