Pakistan Hockey Captain Slams Federation Over ‘Mismanagement’ During Australia Tour
Lahore: The Pakistan men’s hockey team has returned home after its Australia tour, but controversy has followed the squad back. Captain Shakeel Ahmad Butt has publicly criticized the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), alleging serious mismanagement and inadequate arrangements during the tour.
Speaking to reporters at Lahore airport, Butt expressed frustration over what he described as poor accommodation and logistical failures. “There were no proper lodging arrangements for the players.
At one point, we had to spend hours on the roadside,” he said. He further claimed that players were compelled to clean kitchen areas and wash utensils before leaving for matches. “If we have to tidy up kitchens and wash dishes before going to play international matches, what kind of performance do you expect from us?” he asked.
The team had travelled to Australia to compete in the FIH Pro League. Before departing for Canberra, the squad reportedly had to wait for nearly 13 to 14 hours at Sydney airport.
Upon reaching Canberra, they were informed that their hotel booking had been cancelled due to non-payment by the federation. As a result, players were left stranded for hours until alternative arrangements were made.
Hotel authorities reportedly informed the team that the booking was cancelled because advance payment had not been received. The incident sparked criticism back home, especially after the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) confirmed that it had released more than 10 million Pakistani rupees to cover accommodation expenses.
Butt also revealed that although the tour lasted 13 days, arrangements had been made for only 10 days. “After that, we had to shift to cheaper accommodation,” he said. He further alleged that players were warned of disciplinary action if they spoke to the media about the mismanagement.
The controversy has drawn the attention of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has reportedly ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the matter. PSB Director General Noor Us Sabah confirmed that necessary steps are being taken in line with the Prime Minister’s directives.
On the field, Pakistan endured a disappointing campaign, losing all four matches in the second leg of the Pro League. They went down 3–2 and 3–0 against Australia and suffered 5–2 and 6–1 defeats against Germany.
The episode has raised fresh concerns over the state of hockey administration in Pakistan, with calls for accountability growing louder.
