Ancient treasure unearthed during foundation digging in historic Lakkundi village

Lakkundi : A startling discovery was reported on Saturday afternoon in the historic village of Lakkundi in Gadag district, sending waves of excitement across the region. A large cache of what appears to be ancient gold jewellery was unearthed while workers were digging the foundation of an old house, triggering curiosity among locals, historians, and officials alike.

The incident occurred at the house of Kasturevva Ritti in Lakkundi, a village renowned for its rich heritage dating back to the Kalyana Chalukya period. According to sources, the family had begun work to construct a new house after dismantling the old structure. While digging the foundation, labourers struck a metal pot buried deep underground. Initially suspecting scrap, they opened the vessel out of curiosity—only to be stunned by the sight of glittering gold ornaments inside.

Gold ornaments found inside metal pot

Preliminary information suggests that the metal pot contained several gold items, including chains, valuable bangles, and rings of intricate designs. The craftsmanship of the ornaments has drawn particular attention, with locals noting that the designs appear old and distinct from modern jewellery styles.

Adding to the intrigue is the location of the find. The house where the treasure was discovered is situated close to an ancient Lakshmi temple, believed to be centuries old. This proximity has led to speculation that the recovered ornaments may have originally belonged to the temple and were hidden for safekeeping during a period of invasion, unrest, or administrative upheaval.

Historians point out that Lakkundi, once a prominent centre during the Kalyana Chalukya reign, witnessed both prosperity and conflict, making such concealment of valuables historically plausible.

Officials rush to the spot

Soon after news of the discovery spread, officials from the Lakkundi Development Authority and the district administration visited the site. The ornaments have been taken into official custody for examination. Authorities stated that expert analysis will be conducted to determine the age, origin, and historical value of the jewellery.

District officials are also considering the possibility of further excavation in and around the site, suspecting that more archaeological material could be buried underground. Security has been tightened at the location to prevent crowding and ensure the preservation of the site.

Lakkundi: a cradle of temple architecture

Lakkundi is widely regarded as a cradle of temple architecture in Karnataka. Famous for its 11th- and 12th-century temples, the village is often described in historical texts as having 101 temples and 101 stepped wells. Its monuments are celebrated for their refined stone carvings and advanced architectural techniques of the Chalukya era.

Archaeological discoveries are not uncommon in the region, but officials say the latest find is significant due to the quantity of gold ornaments and their apparent state of preservation. Experts believe the treasure could offer valuable insights into the socio-economic conditions, religious practices, and artistic traditions of the period.

For now, the discovery has reignited interest in Lakkundi’s glorious past, with villagers expressing a mix of pride and awe at the reminder of the wealth and cultural sophistication that once flourished beneath their soil.
