Congress party divided over Kogilu Layout eviction; KC Venugopal intervenes

Bengaluru: The recent eviction drive at Kogilu Layout in North Bengaluru has sparked an internal rift within the Congress party, with strong reactions from local residents and the party leadership.

The demolition of houses in the area, primarily affecting migrant families, has drawn widespread criticism, compelling the Congress high command to intervene.

On Saturday, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal spoke with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar regarding the contentious eviction. The action has become a significant point of contention within the party, with concerns raised over the manner in which the operation was carried out.

“The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has expressed serious concerns about the manner in which the eviction was conducted. Such actions require heightened caution, sensitivity, and empathy,” Venugopal stated.

He emphasized that while the government’s intention was not to target illegal encroachments, the manner in which the eviction was executed had led to dissatisfaction among the affected residents, particularly migrant families.

The incident has triggered protests from local residents, particularly from the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and others who claim that the government did not offer adequate compensation or alternative accommodation to those displaced.

In response to growing discontent, both Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar have assured that measures would be taken to provide relief to the affected families.

Venugopal added, “Both CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar have assured that the government will ensure rehabilitation and relief for the displaced families. They are committed to resolving the issues surrounding the eviction, and will guarantee that adequate shelter and basic needs are provided to those affected.”

The local protests highlight the ongoing issue of inadequate housing for marginalized communities, with many residents demanding immediate action from the government to secure alternative housing options. “The government must provide shelter, compensation, and meet the basic needs of the displaced families immediately,” protestors said.

The Kogilu Layout eviction case has brought to the forefront the broader challenges of urbanization, housing rights, and migrant worker welfare in Bengaluru. As political tensions continue to rise, all eyes are now on the Congress leadership to navigate the situation delicately to prevent further damage to the party’s image.
