Bengaluru: In a tragic incident that has raised fresh concerns over household safety, a 26-year-old woman and her four-year-old daughter died after inhaling toxic fumes from a leaking geyser at Panchasheelanagar near Govindarajanagar on Friday.
The victims, identified as Chandini and her daughter Yuvi, reportedly collapsed inside their bathroom after carbon monoxide accumulated due to a geyser malfunction.
According to police, Chandini had switched on the geyser to bathe her child, unaware that the appliance was leaking harmful gas. Within minutes, the bathroom filled with carbon monoxide, causing both mother and child to become unconscious.
Realising something was wrong, Chandini attempted to bring her child out of the bathroom, but both succumbed to the toxic fumes before they could be rescued.
Family members rushed the duo to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared both dead on arrival. The grieving family, originally from a financially modest background, had moved to Bengaluru to rebuild their lives. Chandiniโs husband, who works as a carpenter, was away on duty when the tragedy unfolded.
Police from the local station have registered a case and are investigating whether the geyser was improperly installed or poorly maintained. Initial reports suggest that the bathroom lacked adequate ventilation, a common but dangerous oversight in many urban households.
The bodies have been shifted to Victoria Hospital for post-mortem examination, after which they will be handed over to the family. The incident has prompted authorities to reiterate warnings about the dangers of using gas or electric geysers in closed spaces.
Safety experts emphasise that bathrooms should have proper ventilation and that geysers must be regularly serviced to prevent such fatalities. With winter setting in and geyser usage increasing, officials have urged residents to remain vigilant and prioritise safety in their homes.
