Indira Food Kit: government reduced 5kg rice for BPL, Antyodaya Cardholders

Indira Food Kit: In a major policy update, the Karnataka government has decided to modify the rice distribution under the Annabhagya scheme for BPL (Below Poverty Line) and Antyodaya cardholders. Siddaramaiah government reduced 5kg rice for BPL, Antyodaya Cardholders.

Instead of the existing 10 kg of rice, beneficiaries will now receive 5 kg of rice, with the remaining 5 kg value being provided through an “Indira Food Kit.”

The Indira Food Kit part of the “Indira Integrated Nutrition and Food Initiative for Annabhagya Beneficiaries” will include essential food items such as toor dal (pigeon peas), black gram, sugar, salt (1 kg each), and 1 litre of cooking oil.

This initiative is aimed at preventing misuse of rice allocated under the Annabhagya scheme, ensuring a more balanced distribution of nutritional items, and addressing dietary needs of beneficiaries, according to Food Minister H.K. Patil.

The revised scheme has also received financial approval. Out of the total Rs 6,426 crore allocated for the Annabhagya rice scheme, Rs 6,119.52 crore will be re-appropriated to provide the Indira Food Kit. This budgetary realignment ensures that beneficiaries continue to receive their full entitlement while promoting nutritional security and better management of food resources.

The move is part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance welfare measures under state-run food security schemes, while curbing diversion or improper use of rice meant for the poor. By combining staple grains with other essential food items, the Indira Food Kit aims to provide holistic nutrition and reinforce the welfare objectives of the Annabhagya and Antyodaya programs.

Officials have stated that the rollout of the revised distribution and Indira Food Kits will begin shortly, ensuring timely delivery to cardholders across Karnataka, strengthening food security, and supporting low-income families in the state.
