Karnataka Govt Introduces 7.5% Reservation in Professional Courses for Government School Students

Students from government schools and government pre-university colleges in rural areas have received a major relief in the allocation of government seats in professional education institutions across Karnataka. Karnataka Govt Introduces 7.5% Reservation in Professional Courses for Government School Students.

The state government has issued an official gazette notification introducing a 7.5% horizontal reservation for students who have studied in government-run schools and PU colleges under the “Karnataka Selection of Candidates for Admission to Government Seats in Professional Educational Institutions (Amendment) Rules, 2026.” The revised rules have come into immediate effect.

According to the amended rules, the existing 15% rural quota in professional education admissions has been restructured. Under the new provision, 7.5% of seats will be exclusively reserved for eligible rural candidates who have studied continuously from Class 1 to Class 10 in government schools and government pre-university colleges located in rural areas.

The remaining 7.5% reservation under the rural quota will continue to be available for candidates who have studied from Class 1 to Class 10 in other recognised educational institutions or schools located in rural areas.

The government’s decision is expected to provide greater opportunities and priority in professional course admissions for deserving and economically weaker students who have completed their education in rural government schools. This move aims to improve access to professional education for students from rural backgrounds and ensure better representation in government quota seats.
