Former Karnataka education minister and senior BJP leader B C Nagesh has died at 67 after a prolonged illness, with political leaders expressing condolences over his passing.

Senior BJP leader and former Karnataka School Education and Literacy Minister B C Nagesh has died at the age of 67 following a prolonged illness. He had reportedly been undergoing treatment for a brain tumour at his daughters residence in Jayanagar, Bengaluru.

Nageshs death has led to condolences from across the political spectrum, with leaders and supporters remembering his contribution to Karnataka politics and public life.

Political career and public service

Nagesh had a long association with the BJP and represented the Tiptur Assembly constituency in Tumakuru district. He was elected from the constituency twice, including in 2008 and 2018. He lost the Tiptur seat in the 2023 Karnataka Assembly election.

He later became part of the Basavaraj Bommai led Karnataka government. From 2021 to 2023, he served as Minister for School Education and Literacy as well as the Sakala department. Government records from his tenure also identify him as the states Primary and Secondary Education Minister.

His tenure as education minister included several major policy debates and controversies, including issues surrounding school textbook revisions and education related decisions.

Final journey to Tiptur

Nagesh had been staying at his daughters residence in Bengaluru while receiving treatment for his illness. His condition reportedly worsened before his death.

His mortal remains are expected to be taken from Bengaluru to his home constituency of Tiptur. The final rites are scheduled to take place there on August 19 after members of the public are given an opportunity to pay their respects.

Nageshs death marks the end of a political career that spanned several years in Karnataka, from grassroots party work to his role in the state cabinet.
