HD Kumaraswamy Clarifies Remarks Over DK Shivakumar Mention During Mother’s Funeral

Former Karnataka chief minister explains that omission of DK Shivakumar’s name during tribute was not intentional and says family unity remains above political differences.

Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy has clarified the controversy surrounding his remarks during the funeral ceremony of his mother Chennamma, wife of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda. He said that he did not intentionally avoid mentioning Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s name while expressing gratitude for the state honours given during the final rites.

Kumaraswamy visited his mother’s memorial site at Mavinkere hill area in Holenarasipura taluk of Hassan district on July 21 along with family members. During his visit, he addressed the issue and said that the reference he made to the Chief Minister was indeed about DK Shivakumar.

The clarification came after discussions emerged over Kumaraswamy mentioning Union ministers while thanking those who attended the funeral, but not directly naming the Karnataka Chief Minister. The incident led to speculation about political differences between the two leaders.

Explaining his position, Kumaraswamy said he had not planned to speak during the final tribute. He said that when he took the microphone, emotions took over and he felt as if his mother was inspiring him to speak.

He stated that the absence of DK Shivakumar’s name was not a deliberate decision and requested people not to interpret it as a sign of disrespect or political bitterness. According to him, when he used the word Chief Minister, he was referring to DK Shivakumar.

Kumaraswamy added that he would never stoop to a level where personal or political disagreements would influence a moment of mourning. He said differences can exist within families and political circles, but they should be left aside during important moments.

Highlighting the importance of unity, he said his family continues to stay together despite differences and compared their bond to a beehive where everyone works together. He also expressed hope that every family should maintain similar harmony and togetherness.
