Karnataka Becomes India’s Largest Medical Education Hub With Record MBBS Seats

Karnataka has achieved a major milestone in medical education by becoming the state with the highest number of MBBS seats in India. According to the latest seat matrix released by the National Medical Commission, the state now has a total of 15395 MBBS seats across government and private medical colleges.

The increase in medical seats comes after approvals for additional capacity in several institutions. The latest expansion has strengthened Karnataka’s position as a leading destination for medical aspirants from across the country.

Private colleges drive major seat expansion

A significant share of the growth has come from private medical institutions, which added 1150 new MBBS seats this year. With this increase, the total number of private medical seats in Karnataka has reached 10995.

Two new private medical colleges have also received approval. Alvas Institute of Medical Sciences has been granted 150 seats, while Chettinad Institute of Medical Education has received approval for 100 seats.

Apart from new colleges, several existing institutions have received permission to increase their intake. PES University, Sri Siddhartha and BGS Global Medical College have each received approval for 100 additional seats. Twelve other medical colleges have also been allowed to add 50 seats each.

Government medical colleges also see growth

The government sector has recorded an increase of 150 MBBS seats, raising the total government medical seat capacity from 4250 to 4400.

The additional seats have been approved for institutions including HK Patil Institute of Medical Sciences, Karnataka Medical College and Research Institute, and Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences. Each of these colleges has received approval for 50 more seats.

Mandya and Mysuru colleges expand capacity

The Medical Assessment and Rating Board of NMC has approved further expansion at several institutions. Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences has increased its intake from 150 to 200 seats, while Farooq Academy of Medical Education in Mysuru has received approval to increase seats from 100 to 150.

Officials from Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences said the institution will continue meeting all requirements and infrastructure standards set by the medical regulator.

Earlier, Mysore Medical College and Research Institute and JSS Medical College had also increased their seat capacity to 250 each, further strengthening Karnataka’s medical education network.

More seats may be added soon

The state government is expecting further growth in MBBS seats as six more government medical colleges have applied for additional approvals. These include institutions in Karwar, Yadgir, Koppal, Haveri, Kodagu and Shivamogga.

Officials from the Medical Education Department said efforts are underway to improve infrastructure facilities in these colleges so that more seats can be approved by the NMC before the counselling process concludes.

Authorities believe that increasing medical seats will benefit students from Karnataka as well as candidates applying through the All India quota. Colleges in Hassan with 200 seats and Chikkamagaluru, Chamarajanagar and Kodagu with 150 seats each have maintained their existing intake without any changes.
