Bengaluru Coffee Culture Faces Health Concerns Over Excess Caffeine Intake
Rising cafe trends in Bengaluru are increasing coffee consumption as experts warn about high caffeine, sugar levels and possible health risks among regular drinkers.

Bengaluru’s growing cafe culture has made coffee a daily habit for many young professionals and residents. From traditional filter coffee to modern cafe beverages, coffee shops have become popular meeting spots across the city. However, health experts are now warning that excessive caffeine intake and high sugar content in trendy coffee drinks could create health problems.
Doctors have observed an increase in people visiting hospitals with issues linked to excessive coffee consumption. Reports suggest that several outpatient cases involve complaints such as acidity, sleep problems, anxiety and other health concerns connected with high caffeine intake.
Modern cafe drinks may contain hidden sugar
While traditional South Indian filter coffee remains a favourite, many customers are now choosing beverages such as lattes, cappuccinos and cold coffees. Experts point out that these drinks often contain additional ingredients like caramel, chocolate and vanilla syrups, which can significantly increase sugar and calorie levels.
A single flavoured coffee can sometimes contain calories comparable to a full meal. Regular consumption of such high calorie drinks may contribute to weight gain and increase the risk of lifestyle-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, especially among younger people.
How caffeine affects the body
Caffeine works by blocking adenosine receptors in the brain, a chemical responsible for making people feel tired. This process helps improve alertness and energy levels for a short period. At the same time, caffeine can increase the release of stress hormones such as adrenaline.
For some people, this results in better concentration, while others may experience anxiety, restlessness or an increased feeling of stress after consuming too much caffeine.
Filter coffee and espresso have different effects
Many people assume espresso-based drinks contain the highest caffeine levels, but experts say traditional filter coffee can also deliver a significant amount of caffeine because of its longer brewing process. The use of chicory in some filter coffee blends may reduce intensity, but it does not eliminate caffeine content.
Health professionals generally recommend keeping daily caffeine consumption below 400mg for healthy adults. Excess intake can affect sleep patterns, digestion and overall well being.
Coffee can also trigger acidity problems
Regular coffee consumption, especially on an empty stomach, may worsen acidity and acid reflux symptoms in some individuals. Milk based coffee drinks can also cause discomfort for people sensitive to dairy or acidity issues.
Strong espresso shots may create a sudden stimulation effect on the nervous system and increase heart rate temporarily in some people.
Ways to enjoy coffee without harming health
Experts suggest that coffee lovers do not need to completely avoid their favourite drink but should consume it carefully. Limiting daily caffeine intake, avoiding coffee after 2 pm and reducing sugary additives can help maintain better health.
Drinking enough water and avoiding coffee on an empty stomach are also recommended practices. Choosing simpler coffee options with less sugar can allow people to enjoy the beverage while reducing possible health risks.
