iPhone 18 Pro Max Camera Leak Hints at Major Upgrade With Variable Aperture

Apple’s next flagship smartphone is already generating excitement months before its expected launch, thanks to a new leak focusing on its camera system. The latest information suggests that the iPhone 18 Pro Max could receive one of its biggest photography upgrades in years with the introduction of a variable aperture main camera.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to be part of the iPhone 18 lineup, which is widely anticipated to launch in September 2026. Although Apple has not officially confirmed any specifications, recent leaked documents have revealed details that point to significant improvements in the device’s primary camera.

According to the leaked information, the iPhone 18 Pro Max may feature a new Sony IMX905 image sensor as its main camera. While the sensor is expected to maintain a pixel size of 1.22 micrometers, the biggest change is said to be the addition of variable aperture technology. This feature allows the camera to adjust the size of its aperture depending on lighting conditions, potentially delivering sharper photos, improved low light performance and more natural background blur.

Variable aperture systems have already appeared in several flagship Android smartphones, but if the leak proves accurate, this would be the first time Apple introduces the technology on an iPhone. The LiDAR receiver is also expected to feature the Sony IMX591 sensor, and the front facing selfie camera may continue with the Sony IMX914 sensor.

If these details are accurate, Apple appears to be focusing its biggest imaging improvement on the primary camera rather than redesigning the complete camera system. This approach could still bring noticeable gains in everyday photography and video recording by enhancing image quality through more advanced optical control.

Industry observers also believe that introducing new camera technology could influence the pricing of the iPhone 18 Pro Max. In addition to the upgraded hardware, ongoing global supply challenges involving memory components may further increase production costs, potentially leading to a higher launch price compared with earlier models.
