Orange Alert Issued as Heavy Rain Continues to Lash Uttara Kannada District

Heavy rainfall continues to batter Uttara Kannada district, prompting the district administration to issue an Orange Alert until July 2. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious as weather forecasts indicate that more rain is likely over the coming days. People have been advised to avoid visiting riverbanks, beaches, and other flood prone areas until the situation becomes stable.

While several parts of Karnataka are experiencing below normal rainfall, Uttara Kannada has witnessed an entirely different weather pattern. The district has received relentless showers over the past 36 hours, causing waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and damage to public infrastructure in several locations.

One of the most significant impacts was reported in the temple town of Gokarna. Continuous rain led to water entering the sanctum of the famous Mahabaleshwar Temple, affecting regular religious activities. Temple authorities temporarily restricted devotees from entering the sanctum for touch based worship after noon as floodwater surrounded the sacred shrine. Even the daily afternoon rituals faced interruptions until the accumulated water was removed using pumping equipment.

The heavy rain also created problems across the town, with several streets in Gokarna submerged under water. Tourists visiting the coastal destination and local residents faced considerable inconvenience as vehicles struggled to move through flooded roads. Businesses and daily activities were also affected by the persistent rainfall.

The situation was equally challenging in other parts of the district. Coastal taluks continued to receive uninterrupted rainfall for nearly 36 hours, resulting in rising water levels across low lying areas. Several roads became difficult to navigate, increasing concerns about further flooding if the rain continued.

One of the worst affected stretches was the Kumta Siddapur State Highway. Large portions of the road were submerged, making travel difficult for both two wheeler riders and heavy vehicles. Motorists were forced to slow down significantly while crossing waterlogged sections, leading to traffic delays and safety concerns.

Residents living near the flooded highway feared that additional rainfall could have caused water to enter nearby homes and commercial establishments. Fortunately, the intensity of the rain eased before the situation escalated further, reducing the immediate risk of extensive property damage.

District officials continue to closely monitor the developing weather conditions. Deputy Commissioner Lakshmipriya has appealed to the public to follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable locations. The administration has also urged people to remain alert as weather conditions can change rapidly during the ongoing monsoon season.
