Swim Safely This Summer: Essential Skin Care Tips to Protect Your Skin from Chlorine Damage

Swimming is healthy and refreshing but chlorine in pool water can dry out skin and cause irritation so experts recommend following proper pre and post swim skincare routine for protection

Swimming is one of the most popular activities during summer as it helps the body stay cool, active and refreshed. Many people prefer spending time in pools to beat the heat and maintain fitness. However, while swimming is excellent for health, it can sometimes be harsh on the skin due to chemicals used in pool water.

Most swimming pools use chlorine to keep the water clean and safe from bacteria. Although it serves an important purpose, chlorine can strip away the skin’s natural oils. This often leads to dryness, tanning, itchiness and sometimes mild irritation or sensitivity. Because of this, skincare before and after swimming becomes very important for regular swimmers.

One simple yet effective step before entering the pool is taking a quick shower with plain water. This helps the skin absorb moisture in advance, reducing the impact of chlorine exposure. Wet skin tends to absorb fewer chemicals, which works as a natural protective layer during swimming sessions.

Another important step is applying sunscreen, especially when swimming in outdoor pools. Sun exposure combined with chlorine can make the skin more prone to tanning and damage. Using a waterproof sunscreen with at least SPF 30 about 20 minutes before swimming can help protect exposed areas like the face, arms and legs effectively.

After swimming, proper care is equally important. Rinsing the body thoroughly with clean water helps remove chlorine residue from the skin. Following this with a gentle moisturizer can restore lost hydration and keep the skin soft and healthy.

With a few simple habits like pre swim rinsing, sunscreen protection and post swim moisturising, swimmers can enjoy their time in the pool without worrying about skin damage. A little care can go a long way in keeping the skin healthy, glowing and protected throughout the summer.
