CM Siddaramaiah Lays Foundation Stone for country’s 2nd largest cricket stadium in Anekal

The Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) is developing the country's second-largest cricket stadium across 75 acres (1,21,713 square meters) in Suryanagar 4th Phase, Anekal

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, alongside Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar, officially laid the foundation stone for India’s second-largest international cricket stadium on May 23, 2026. The new stadium aims to transition major sporting events out of central Bengaluru due to the limited capacity and safety vulnerabilities of the older M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

This follows an unfortunate stampede outside Chinnaswamy in June 2025 during an IPL victory celebration, after which a judicial commission declared the central venue unsafe for massive crowds.

The Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) is developing the country’s second-largest cricket stadium across 75 acres (1,21,713 square meters) in Suryanagar 4th Phase, Anekal (near the Karnataka–Tamil Nadu border), which is expected to cost approximately Rs 943 crore to Rs 950 crore, accommodate 80,000 spectators (trailing only the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad), and reach completion by 2029.

Project Design and Multi-Use Vision:

Developed under the KHB Surya Sports Village umbrella, the “seating bowl” design of the stadium is inspired by the advanced structural works of the globally renowned firm Walter P. Moore. Beyond cricket, the state government plans to utilize the infrastructure as a multi-use hub capable of hosting mega-concerts, track events, and large-scale entertainment fixtures.

While cricket fans are thrilled by the prospect of a world-class mega-stadium, the project has drawn sharp criticism from urban planners, opposition leaders, and local industry giants like Biocon’s Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw.

The high-tech indoor stadium will feature a global-standard arena equipped for 11 major sports, including racquet and court sports like badminton, table tennis, and squash; team sports like basketball, volleyball, handball, kabaddi, and kho-kho; and combat and strength sports such as judo, taekwondo, wrestling, fencing, and weightlifting.

The outdoor and aquatics facilities will feature a premium synthetic athletic track alongside dedicated courts for tennis, basketball, volleyball, and handball, ultra-modern courts for trending sports like padel and pickleball, and an international-standard aquatics center complete with an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a high-diving pool, and a separate practice pool.

To support massive crowds, athletes, and high-profile guests, the complex features world-class infrastructure and premium amenities, including a multi-level parking facility for over 500 vehicles, a commercial hub with retail spaces, sports showrooms, and spacious food courts, high-tech residential blocks for players and staff, and exclusive additions like a dedicated helipad, a sprawling public plaza, and an eco-friendly Green Zone surrounding the venue.
