Aadhaar Address Update Gets Simpler With New Family Based Method
UIDAI introduces Head of Family method allowing Aadhaar users to update address without documents by using family member verification making the process easier for students tenants and individuals without valid proof

Updating an address on Aadhaar is becoming far less complicated, especially for people who struggle to provide valid proof of residence. The Unique Identification Authority of India has introduced a practical solution that allows users to change their address without traditional documents, offering relief to a large section of residents.
The new system, known as the Head of Family method, enables individuals to use the address already registered in a family member’s Aadhaar. This approach is particularly useful for students, homemakers, and tenants who often do not have official address documents in their own name. By relying on family based verification, the process removes one of the biggest hurdles in updating Aadhaar details.
Under this method, users can link their address update request to a close family member such as a parent, spouse, or guardian. Instead of submitting documents like electricity bills or rental agreements, applicants only need the consent and Aadhaar details of the head of the family. This change reflects a broader push to make essential services more accessible and user friendly.
The process itself has been designed to be fully digital. Users need to log in through the Aadhaar platform or mobile application and navigate to the address update section under services. From there, they can select the option to update their address using a family member’s Aadhaar details.
Once the request is initiated, applicants must enter the Aadhaar number of the head of family and specify the relationship. The system then requires self declaration and face authentication to ensure the request is genuine. These verification steps are important to maintain security while simplifying access.
A nominal fee of ₹75 is charged for this service, which can be paid online. After completing the payment, a service request number is generated. This number plays a key role in the final step, as it must be shared with the head of family for approval.
The responsibility then shifts to the family member, who must log in to their Aadhaar account and review the request in the member request section. Once they approve it using the provided number, the address update is processed and completed.
This updated framework is expected to benefit millions who previously faced delays or rejections due to lack of documentation. By introducing a trust based verification system, the authority has made Aadhaar updates more inclusive while maintaining necessary safeguards.
