Electric Two Wheeler Market Slips 22 Percent While Ola Electric Shows Monthly Recovery
Indiaβs electric scooter segment faces overall slowdown as major brands report mixed performance with TVS retaining leadership and Ola Electric recording monthly growth despite industry wide decline in registrations

The Indian electric two wheeler industry witnessed a noticeable slowdown in April, with overall registrations falling by nearly 22 percent. According to data from the Vahan portal, total electric scooter registrations dropped to around 1.48 lakh units, reflecting a cooling demand in the segment after months of strong growth.
Despite the downturn, TVS Motor Company managed to hold its top position in the market. The company sold 37,661 units in April, securing a market share of about 25 percent. However, even the market leader was not immune to the slowdown, as its sales declined by 24 percent compared to the previous month.
In the second position, Bajaj Auto saw a decline in its popular Chetak electric scooter sales. The brand recorded 32,883 units, marking a drop of nearly 29 percent. Despite the fall, Bajaj maintained a strong presence with around 22 percent market share, showing continued consumer trust in its electric lineup.
Another major player, Ather Energy, also experienced pressure in the market. Its sales dropped by more than 25 percent, though it still managed to secure the third position with 27,024 units sold in April. The brand continues to focus on premium electric scooters but is facing stiff competition in the evolving segment.
Amid the overall decline, Ola Electric stood out with a monthly recovery. The company reported sales of 12,166 units in April, registering nearly 20 percent growth compared to the previous month. After facing challenges in recent months, this improvement signals a gradual rebound in consumer demand for its products.
The company has attributed the rise to increasing customer confidence and stronger demand in key states such as Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. It also highlighted growing acceptance of its electric scooters and motorcycles across different regions, suggesting that market sentiment may be slowly improving.
Recently, Ola Electric expanded its portfolio with the launch of the S1 X+ 5.2 kWh scooter. The model comes equipped with the company developed 4680 Bharat Cell battery, offering a claimed range of up to 320 kilometers. It also features a 11 kW mid drive motor, integrated motor control unit, and advanced safety systems including brake by wire technology and front disc brakes.
The company now offers a wide range of electric scooters under its S1 lineup, including multiple battery configurations across S1 Pro+, S1 Pro, and S1 X variants. It has also entered the electric motorcycle space with its Roadster series, aiming to strengthen its position in the broader electric mobility market.
While the overall industry is experiencing a temporary slowdown, the mix of established leadership, emerging competition, and product innovation suggests that Indiaβs electric two wheeler market continues to evolve rapidly with shifting consumer preferences.
