Record rainfall lashes Bengaluru, IMD issues yellow alert for next three days

Bengaluru : The city witnessed unprecedented weather conditions on April 29, as heavy rain accompanied by hailstorms, thunder, and lightning created a new record for April rainfall in the capital. According to data from the India Meteorological Department, Bengaluru recorded 111 mm of rainfall in a single evening, matching a similar high recorded back in 2001.

The intense downpour disrupted normal life across the city, leading to waterlogging, traffic congestion, and fallen tree branches in several areas. Officials have now issued a yellow alert for the next three days, warning of continued rainfall and strong winds ranging between 30 to 40 kmph.

Rainfall distribution across various parts of the city highlights the widespread nature of the storm. Sampangi Ramanagar recorded 39 mm, Pulakeshinagar received 36.5 mm, Bommanahalli saw 31 mm, while Cottonpet reported 29 mm. HAL Airport registered 25 mm rainfall, BTM Layout recorded 22.5 mm, and Marathahalli received 18.5 mm.

The weather department has extended the warning beyond Bengaluru, placing a large part of Karnataka under yellow alert. Districts including Yadgir, Raichur, Bagalkot, Koppal, Dharwad, Gadag, Ballari, Vijayanagar, Haveri, Davanagere, Shivamogga, Chitradurga, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Tumakuru, Kodagu, Mysuru, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Ramanagara, Chikkaballapur, Kolar, and Bengaluru Rural are expected to witness similar weather conditions.

Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, especially in low-lying areas prone to flooding and near trees or unstable structures due to strong winds.

CM directs swift action

In the aftermath of the heavy rains and related incidents, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has issued strict instructions to civic authorities to take immediate preventive measures.

He directed officials to clear blocked manholes without delay and remove weak or fallen tree branches that could pose a risk to public safety. Emphasis was also laid on ensuring smooth drainage of water in underpasses and preventing water stagnation on major roads.

Additionally, the Chief Minister urged authorities to act proactively to avoid tragedies like the recent wall collapse near Bowring Hospital. He stressed the importance of preparedness and coordination among departments to mitigate risks during continued rainfall.

As Bengaluru braces for more showers, the focus now remains on disaster preparedness and minimizing disruptions in the days ahead.
