Sudden rain havoc in Bengaluru: 8 dead after wall collapse near bowring hospital

Bengaluru : What began as a sudden spell of relief from scorching heat turned into a deadly tragedy in Bengaluru on Tuesday evening, as heavy rain and strong winds led to the collapse of a compound wall near the emergency section of Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital in Shivajinagar, claiming eight lives, including three children.

The city witnessed a sharp weather shift with hailstorms and intense rainfall lasting nearly 30 minutes. However, the impact was devastating. The old compound wall of the hospital reportedly weakened under the pressure of continuous rain and gusty winds, eventually collapsing on people gathered nearby.

Victims included street vendors operating pushcarts and footpath stalls, who had taken shelter along the wall using tarpaulin sheets. As the rain intensified, pedestrians also joined them, unknowingly placing themselves in danger. Eyewitnesses said the collapse was sudden, leaving little time for escape.

“There was chaos everywhere. The wall just gave way and people were trapped underneath within seconds,” said a witness present at the scene.

Local residents and passersby immediately rushed to help, pulling out victims from under the debris even before emergency teams arrived. Several injured persons were shifted to nearby hospitals, while rescue operations continued amid fears that more people could be trapped.

Authorities indicated that the victims were primarily roadside vendors and pedestrians, though identification is still underway. The incident has raised serious concerns about the condition of aging structures in high-footfall areas of the city.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the accident site and assessed the situation. Expressing deep sorrow, he assured that the government would conduct a thorough investigation and take necessary action against any lapses. He also directed officials to ensure immediate relief measures for the victims’ families.

The tragedy has once again exposed the risks posed by unregulated street activity near fragile structures and the urgent need for infrastructure audits, especially ahead of monsoon conditions in Bengaluru.
