Thunderstorms, hailstorms to lash Karnataka; IMD issues orange alert for multiple districts

Bengaluru : After days of relentless heat, Karnataka is likely to witness a much-needed weather shift, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rainfall activity across several regions of the state. Coastal Karnataka, which has been reeling under intense heatwave conditions, is expected to receive thunderstorm-driven showers, bringing partial relief to residents.
According to the department, districts such as Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, and Udupi, which had been under a heatwave alert over the past few days, may experience moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning. While isolated showers were reported earlier, today’s rainfall is expected to be more widespread and significant, helping cool down temperatures along the coast.
Meanwhile, north interior Karnataka is bracing for more intense weather conditions. The IMD has issued an orange alert for several districts, warning of heavy thunderstorms and hailstorms over the next two to three days. Districts including Bagalkote, Raichur, Yadgir, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, and Koppal are likely to witness gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph, accompanied by lightning and hail. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, particularly farmers and those in open areas, as hailstorms could damage standing crops and property.
In south interior Karnataka, districts such as Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Davanagere, and Vijayanagara are also expected to receive rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning. Additionally, Kodagu, Kolar, and Mysuru districts may witness moderate rainfall along with strong winds, which could disrupt normal activities.
The capital city Bengaluru and its surrounding districts, including Bengaluru Rural, Ballari, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Chitradurga, Hassan, Mandya, Ramanagara, and Tumakuru, are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall with wind speeds of 30–40 kmph. Though not as intense as in northern districts, the showers are expected to provide some respite from rising temperatures.
Weather officials have advised citizens to take precautions during thunderstorms, including avoiding open fields, staying away from trees and electric poles, and securing loose objects that could be blown away by strong winds.
With the changing weather pattern, the state is likely to transition from extreme heat to a more unstable but cooler climate over the coming days, offering relief while also posing challenges due to storm activity.
