Mangaluru cooker bomb blast case: NIA  court awards 10-year jail term to accused shariq

Mangaluru, : In a major development in the 2022 blast case, a special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has sentenced Mohammed Shariq to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for his role in the Mangaluru cooker bomb explosion. The verdict comes after a prolonged trial and is seen as a significant step in addressing terror-related activities in the state.

The incident had taken place on November 19, 2022, near Kankanady in Mangaluru, when a powerful blast occurred inside an autorickshaw. Investigations later confirmed that the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) fitted inside a pressure cooker. The accused was reportedly carrying the device when it accidentally detonated, injuring both himself and the auto driver. Authorities believe that a major disaster was averted as the blast occurred before reaching a crowded target location.

During the course of investigation, officials recovered crucial evidence from the blast site, including components such as detonators, electric circuits, and batteries. Based on these findings, the case was handed over to the NIA due to its serious implications on national security.

According to the probe, Shariq had used a fake identity and had allegedly prepared the explosive device at a rented accommodation in Mysuru. The agency also suspected that he was influenced by extremist ideology linked to the ISIS and was acting as a “lone wolf” operative.

After examining the evidence and witness testimonies, the NIA special court found the accused guilty under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 121A (conspiracy to wage war against the Government of India) and Section 326 (causing grievous hurt using dangerous weapons), along with provisions under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), which deals with terror-related offences.

Officials stated that the judgment underscores the seriousness with which courts are dealing with cases involving threats to national security. The case had triggered widespread concern across Karnataka, particularly due to the potential scale of damage had the explosive device reached its intended destination.

Meanwhile, investigations related to other accused in the case are still ongoing, and authorities have indicated that further legal proceedings will continue.

The verdict has been welcomed by security agencies, which view it as a deterrent against individuals engaging in extremist activities. The case also highlights the importance of vigilance and timely intervention by investigative agencies in preventing large-scale tragedies.
