Dr K S Somashekhar appointed Rajya Sabha Secretary

 

Bengaluru, : In a significant development, Dr K S Somashekhar has been appointed as the new Secretary of the Rajya Sabha. The appointment was announced by Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan.

Hailing from Kolar district in Karnataka, Dr Somashekhar brings over three decades of rich experience in parliamentary services. His journey began as a translator in the Rajya Sabha Secretariat in 1993, and over the years, he rose through the ranks to hold key administrative positions, including Director, Joint Director, Joint Secretary and Additional Secretary.

Born in Neelatur village of Srinivasapura taluk into a modest agricultural family, he is the son of a teacher. A scholar with a doctorate in literature, Dr Somashekhar is proficient in five languages, including Kannada, which has aided his extensive work in translation and parliamentary proceedings.

Throughout his career, he has contributed significantly to legislative administration, parliamentary procedures, and committee management. He has also been associated with parliamentary committees related to science, technology and health, showcasing his diverse expertise.

In addition, Dr Somashekhar has represented India in various international forums and conferences. He has undergone specialised parliamentary training in the United Kingdom and the European Union, and has participated in Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meetings held in Geneva.

His elevation to the post of Secretary is seen as a recognition of his dedication and expertise in parliamentary affairs. The appointment is also a moment of pride for Karnataka, as a native of the state assumes one of the top administrative roles in the country’s legislative framework.
