UPI Users Alert: Google Pay, PhonePay new rules from August 1

UPI users Alert: The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) will implement new rules for Unified Payments Interface (UPI) from August 1, 2025. These changes are important for users of Google Pay, PhonePay, PayTM, and other UPI apps.

These rules are aimed at ensuring the stability, security, and efficiency of the digital payment system. Here is the details of these new rules.

Time limit for a daily balance check:

Since August 1, 2025, customers can check the bank account balance only 50 times a day in a UPI App (eg Google Pay, PhonePay, PayTM). This limit has been implemented to reduce the server pressure and implement the smooth functioning of the system. Balance is shown in the automatic inbox message when money is credit or debit.

Time limit for account link check:

Customers can check bank accounts that are linked to their mobile number only 25 times a day. This action requires consumer consent and this rule has been enacted to prevent API misuse.

Strict control over the use of API:

NPCI has suggested strictly monitoring API requests to all payment service providers (PSPS). In violation, penalties, API throttling, or new users’ onboarding may be banned. By August 31, 2025, PSPs must submit the system audit consent to NPCI.

P2M turnover limit for offline traders:

Since August 1, 2025, offline, the QR Share and Pay transactions have a limit of ₹ 2,000 for non -confirmed traders. There is a complete ban on international P2M transactions. This move reduces the risk of fraud.

Self Top-Up Facility for UPI Light:

NPCI has introduced a self-top-up feature for small-valued PIN-free transactions for UPI Light users. There is a limit to five auto recharges per day, and customers can set the top-up amount.

Emphasis on cyber security:

Mobile numbers that have been inactive for more than a year are removed from the UPI system. This reduces the risk of fraud that can be caused by re-activated numbers from telecom companies.

Advice for customers:

Google Pay, PhonePay, and PayTM users must ensure that their mobile number is active. Know about the limits of Balance Check and Account Link Check. These new rules have been implemented to make digital payments more secure and reliable.
