Sony Raises PS5 Prices Again as Global Costs Hit Gaming Industry
Sony increases PlayStation 5 prices across all models citing global economic pressure while rising component costs tariffs and supply issues push gaming consoles into a more expensive bracket worldwide

Gamers around the world are facing another price shock as Sony has announced a fresh increase in the cost of its popular PlayStation 5 lineup. The revised pricing will come into effect from April 2, making every variant of the console more expensive than before.
The standard disc version of the PlayStation 5 will now retail at 649.99 dollars, up from its earlier price of 549.99 dollars. The digital edition has also seen a similar jump, moving from 499.99 dollars to 599.99 dollars. Meanwhile, the more powerful PlayStation 5 Pro has witnessed a significant hike, climbing to 899.99 dollars from its previous price of 749.99 dollars.
This marks the second price revision by Sony within a year. The company had already raised prices by around 50 dollars in August last year. When combined, the total increase means the standard PlayStation 5 now costs roughly 150 dollars more than its original launch price, reflecting a sharp shift in pricing strategy in less than a year.
Sony has attributed the latest hike to ongoing global economic pressure. However, industry analysts point out that the reasons go beyond a single factor. Rising component costs, especially memory, have played a major role. The surge in demand for AI driven data centers has pushed RAM prices higher, indirectly affecting consumer electronics like gaming consoles.
Geopolitical tensions and trade policies are also adding to the burden. Tariffs in key markets, along with ongoing conflicts involving regions such as Ukraine and Iran, have disrupted supply chains and increased manufacturing costs. These challenges are forcing companies to pass on the added expenses to consumers.
Importantly, Sony is not alone in making such moves. Microsoft and Nintendo have also adjusted prices for their gaming hardware in recent months. Xbox consoles and accessories saw price increases last year, while the Nintendo Switch was revised upward from 299 dollars to 339 dollars, signaling a broader trend across the gaming industry.
In India, Sony has not yet officially announced revised pricing under this latest update. However, past trends suggest a potential increase could be on the horizon. Last year, the company quietly raised the price of the PS5 digital edition in the country, while keeping the disc version unchanged.
With costs continuing to rise globally, the gaming industry appears to be entering a phase where affordability could become a concern for many buyers. For now, players hoping to upgrade their consoles may need to prepare for higher spending as economic pressures reshape the market.
