PhonePe Biometric Authentication: PhonePe new rule for transactions Up to Rs 5,000
PhonePe Biometric Authentication: PhonePe has indeed officially started rolling out biometric authentication for UPI payments, allowing you to authorize transactions up to Rs 5,000 using just your fingerprint or face ID.
This move marks the beginning of the end for the traditional UPI PIN for daily small-to-medium purchases.
How it Works:
For any payment up to Rs 5,000—whether you are scanning a QR at a local shop, sending money to a friend, or paying online—you can now skip typing your PIN.
The Rs 5,000 cap is in line with current RBI and NPCI guidelines for simplified authentication. For any amount above Rs 5,000, the app will still require your secure 4 or 6-digit UPI PIN.
If the biometric scan fails (e.g., due to low light for face ID or a wet finger for the sensor), the app will immediately prompt you to enter your UPI PIN as a backup.
Why the Change?
One of the biggest risks in crowded places is someone watching you type your PIN over your shoulder. Biometrics eliminates this risk entirely. A large percentage of UPI failures are due to “Incorrect PIN” entries. Biometrics are hardware-grade and significantly reduce these human errors.
It cuts down the transaction time by several seconds, making the “checkout” experience at busy counters much smoother.
How to Enable It:
The feature is currently rolling out to Android users first (iOS is expected shortly). Here’s how you can set it up:
Open PhonePe and tap on your Profile (top left).
Go to Payment Settings or Manage Payments.
Look for the “Biometric Pay” icon/toggle.
Enable it for your linked bank accounts.
You will need to enter your UPI PIN one last time to authorize the biometric link.
This is part of the broader RBI 2026 framework that encourages “Risk-Based Authentication,” moving away from SMS OTPs and static PINs toward more secure, device-native methods.
