Teenage pregnancy: The Karnataka Health Department and the Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) Cell report indicate a persistent and concerning trend of teenage pregnancies in the state. Teenage pregnancy huge increase in Karnataka: Scary report out.

While there have been some fluctuations, the numbers remain high and are considered a significant public health and social challenge. According to statistics from the RCH Cell, Karnataka reported 25,436 teenage pregnancies between April 2024 and February 2025.

This figure is based on cases identified in government hospitals, and experts believe the actual number could be much higher as many cases go unreported from private clinics and home births.

The number of teenage pregnancies has fluctuated over the past few years.

2020-21: 42,120 cases

2021-22: 44,631 cases

2022-23: 49,875 cases

2023-24: 39,606 cases

2024-25 (until Feb): 26,436 cases

Geographical Distribution: Bengaluru Urban district consistently records the highest number of cases, with 2,723 cases in the April 2024-February 2025 period. Other districts with a high incidence include Belagavi, Vijayapura, and Raichur.

Reasons for the High Numbers:

Health and social welfare officials, as well as child rights activists, have cited several interconnected factors for this issue:

1. Child Marriage: This remains a primary driver, particularly in rural and economically disadvantaged areas. Despite laws against it, secret child marriages are still prevalent, and they often lead to early pregnancies.

2. Lack of Awareness and Education: There is a significant lack of comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education for adolescents and their parents. Many teenagers are unaware of the risks of unprotected sex, contraception, and the health consequences of early pregnancy for both the mother and the child.

3. Influence of Social Media: Officials and experts have pointed to the widespread and unregulated access to social media. They state that the internet exposes teenagers to inappropriate content, leading to early relationships and impulsive decisions without proper knowledge of the repercussions.

4. Socioeconomic Factors: Poverty, parental migration for work, and school dropouts create environments where adolescent girls are more vulnerable to exploitation and early relationships.

5. Underreporting: The official data, which largely comes from government hospitals, is not a complete picture. Many cases in private clinics or those involving secretive child marriages are not officially registered, making it difficult to assess the true scale of the problem.

The government has formed a “central task force” involving multiple departments, including Health and Family Welfare, Women and Child Development, and Education. This task force is responsible for coordinating efforts to prevent teenage pregnancies at the grassroots level.

The state is scaling up awareness programs on self-defense, child marriage, and sexual awareness in schools. There is also a push to educate parents and children on the safe use of social media.

The government has mandated stricter surveillance in hostels and is working to track long-term absentee students to identify potential cases of child marriage or early pregnancy.

Authorities are being instructed to strictly enforce laws like the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Child Marriage Act. The government is also cracking down on the illegal sale of abortion pills without a prescription.
