Nipah virus scare: Strict Restriction imposed till October 10 in Karnataka

The government has said that it is taking all precautionary measures. Caution has been exercised in the border areas and strict vigil has been maintained in all government and private hospitals.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said on Wednesday that Nipah virus surveillance will continue in Kerala borders till October 10 . Speaking to reporters in Mangaluru after holding a meeting with health officials of Chamarajanagar, Mysuru, Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada districts, which share a border with Kerala, he said that no suspected cases of Nipah have been reported in the state.

Caution has been exercised in the border areas and strict vigil has been maintained in all government and private hospitals. Around 20 check posts have been set up in four districts and so far more than 10,000 people have been screened for fever, cough and other symptoms.

He said strict vigil has been put in place in the villages of HD Kote taluk, bordering 150 km from the epicenter of Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala and Mangaluru, which has close links with Kerala. The minister said that the death rate of Nipah is 40-70% and as there is no vaccine for the disease, we are very cautious.

Strict Restriction will continue till October 10, when the incubation period of the last Nipah case detected in Kerala (September 1) ends. He said that the restriction will be relaxed later. So far no case has been found. The minister replied to a question that if a suspected case comes to our notice, we will send their sample to the virology institute for testing.

Further, the Minister informed that the authorities have been informed to take all necessary measures by keeping facilities like Quarantine, Special Wards, Masks to deal with any kind of emergencies.
