Karnataka Heavy Rainfall: school holiday, issued alert

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that there will be heavy rains for four more days across the state, including the coastal and mountainous regions of the state. The state capital Bengaluru, Malnadu and coastal districts will receive heavy rains for four days from today and yellow alert has been announced in Bengaluru today. Orange alert has been declared in the hill country and coast. IMD issued heavy rainfall heavy rainfall alert in Kodagu, a holiday has been declared for schools and colleges today as a precautionary measure.

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Orange alert has been issued for Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Dakshina Kannada districts today. A yellow alert has been announced for heavy rains in northern interior Bagalkote, Belgaum, Bidar, Gadag, Kalaburagi, and Vijayapur, southern interior Bengaluru city, Rural, Hassan, Mandya, Mysore, Tumkur, Chamarajanagar districts.

Karnataka will see fairly widespread to widespread rains with thunderstorms and lightning from Thursday to Monday (August 6-8). Heavy rains (64.5 mm-115.5 mm) may also lash isolated parts of the state during this five-day period. Additionally, very heavy rainfall (115.5 mm-204 mm) may also be observed in some parts of coastal and south interior Karnataka heavy rain on Saturday August 6. Chances of torrential extremely heavy rains (204 mm) may also leave some areas of coastal as well as south interior Karnataka reeling on Friday.

In view of these predictions, the IMD has put coastal and south interior Karnataka on an orange alert (meaning ‘be prepared’ on Saturday 6. North interior Karnataka will also be on the same alert for Friday, while a yellow watch (meaning ‘be updated’) will occupy the regions not under the orange alert till Monday (August 8).
