Heavy Rainfall Alert in Karnataka, issued orange alert

Heavy showers are set to lash coastal and hilly regions of Karnataka till Thursday (June 30), and Bengaluru too is likely to witness rain in the evenings. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said Heavy rain with thunder and lightning is predicted in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Udupi.

An orange alert has been issued for the region. Heavy Rainfall Alert in Karnataka has also been issued in the districts of Shivamogga, Hassan, Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru for Tuesday. A yellow alert has been issued in the north Karnataka districts of Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Koppal, and Belagavi, Haveri, Dharwad and Hubballi.

The coastal and hilly regions of Karnataka have been receiving rain for the past four days. The meteorological department has predicted that the coastal districts of Karnataka would receive maximum rainfall during this monsoon season. Moreover, an orange alert has been issued over Himachal for the next 48 hours and over Uttarakhand on Thursday, so as to urge the locals to ‘be prepared’ for rough conditions.

The IMD has also indicated a moderate to high risk of flash floods, inundation and surface run-off in parts of Himachal and Uttarakhand in this forecast period. Meanwhile, Jammu & Kashmir will experience thunderstorm activity until Thursday, with heavy rainfall expected to begin on Friday, July 1.

In spite of the southwest monsoon’s early arrival over the Indian mainland, its advancement over to the Western Himalayan Region has gotten delayed this year. Normally, the first monsoon showers greet these northern states by June 20-25.
