Team India has suffered a major blow ahead of the South Africa match as Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of the Cricket World Cup due to an ankle injury sustained against Bangladesh.

He has been replaced by Prashid Krishna. It was a big blow for India as Pandya provided the much needed balance to the playing XI. Earlier, the injury had to take time and it was reported that Pandya would be fit by the time of the last league match against the Netherlands on November 12.

However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has now confirmed that Pandya has been ruled out of the World Cup 2023. “His (Pandya’s) place in the Indian squad will be taken by Parshid Krishna, the novice fast bowler will be included into the playing group on Saturday after approval by the Event Technical Committee of the tournament,” read the ICC announcement.

Pacer Krishna has played 19 white ball games for India and last played a bilateral series against Australia in September. Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya was injured while saving a direct drive off his bowling during the Bangladesh match. Mohammad Shami, who has replaced Pandya as a pacer, has scored good runs in these matches. Shami has taken 14 wickets in 3 matches. But in Pandya’s absence, India will have to stick to this combination going forward. This meant India would have to play with only five pure bowlers and accommodating a spinner would mean sacrificing pacers.

Krishna will be available for selection for the World Cup match against South Africa after the ICC’s Event Technical Committee approves the replacement. India are currently at the top of the points table with 7 wins from 7 matches and face second-placed South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. It is good for India that they have already qualified for the World Cup semis.

They have to play two crucial knockout matches without Pandya and they hope to win both to lift the ICC trophy after a gap of 10 years and the World Cup after a 12-year wait. India beat Sri Lanka by a huge margin of 302 runs to qualify for the semi-finals. However, India need to beat South Africa to ensure the top spot.
