Venkatesh Prasad leading race to become next India chief selector: Report

It has come to light that former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad is now the front runner to succeed Chetan Sharma as the new senior men’s chief selector of India. After India’s dismal campaign in the T20 World Cup, the first major change that BCCi announced was that they would end the term of the current senior men’s selection panel led by Chetan Sharma. They also announced that they were welcoming applications from former cricketers for the soon to be vacant positions. Since, then a number of names have donned the rounds, as many former Indian cricketers were rumoured to be taking up the vacant positions.

However, according to a report by The Times of India, it has come to light that former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad is now the front runner to succeed Chetan Sharma as the new senior men’s chief selector of India.

The report also states that D Vasu and Kanwaljit Singh are the other applicants from the South Zone, but the latter’s nomination might not be considered since he is 64 years old, and the age cut off to be a BCCI selector is 60. From the West Zone, Mumbai chief selector Salil Ankola is the front runner with Nayan Mongia and Sameer Dighe being the other big candidates.

Subroto Banerjee and SS Das are the competitors from the East Zone, while Nikhil Chopra is the front runner from the North Zone. Venkatesh Prasad was one of the mainstays in the pace bowling department for India during the 1990’s. he donned the national team colours from 1996 to 2001, where in he played 33 Tests and 161 ODIs, having picked up a total of 292 wickets across both formats.

Prasad has had quite the accomplished coaching career as well. He was the Indian bowling coach during Team India’s triumphant run in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. He was also the bowling coach of the Chennai Super Kings from 2008 to 2009, having held the same post for the Punjab Kings later. He was also the head coach of Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh Ranji Teams.
