T20 World Cup: Glenn Phillips, Trent Boult shine as New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by 65 runs

New Zealand batter Glenn Phillips smashed a century as the Kiwis registered a 65-run win over Sri Lanka at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Kiwis remain unbeaten and now sit atop Group-1 in the Super-12 stage of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. In what was a crucial tie in Group-1 of the Super-12 stage, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and opted the bat first.The Kiwis got off to a horrendous start, losing openers Finn Allen and Devon Conway in quick succession. Coming in at 7/2, Glenn Phillips started off slowly, alongside captain Kane Williamson.

However, Williamson couldn’t make much difference to the scoreboard and walked back to the pavilion after getting caught behind through a sensational delivery by Kasun Rajitha. After Williamson’s wicket, Phillips took on the role of the aggressor with support from Daryl Mitchell.

However, Mitchell couldn’t hold on for long, losing his wicket after scoring 22 runs off 24 balls. Jimmy Neesham was the next to walk in for New Zealand but couldn’t make much difference, departing without even hitting double figures.

Even though wickets kept falling around him, Phillips continued his onslaught on the Sri Lankan bowlers and went on to complete his century in just 61 balls. The 25-year-old smashed 10 boundaries and 4 sixes against the Sri Lankans as he pulled New Zealand back into the game.

He was eventually dismissed by Lahiru Kumara, getting caught by Dasun Shanaka.With this knock. Phillips became the first batter to score a century in World Cups while coming in to bat in the middle order. Mitchell Santner provided New Zealand with a final flourish as Kiwis registered 167/7 on the board after 20 overs.

In the second innings, Trent Boult and Tim Southee wreaked havoc on the Sri Lankan top order. Southee dismissed Pathum Nissanka in the very first over. Boult then went on to get rid of Kusal Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva, and Charith Asalanka as New Zealand piled the pressure on the Sri Lankans.Chamika Karunaratne was the next to fall, being caught by Boult at deep mid-wicket after he tried to hit Santner out of the park.
