The Indian government has planned to control the increasing number of online financial fraud cases in the country and the telecom companies have been instructed to trace and cancel the mobile sets and numbers used by fraudsters. During the investigation, many instances of thousands of SIMs being used in single mobile handsets were found. 28,000 such handsets have been disabled. 20 lakh mobile numbers used in this are being verified. SIMs that fail verification will be disconnected.

According to a report in the Economic Times newspaper, the government has instructed the telecom operators to cancel mobile connections that may be misused. ‘During the comprehensive investigation, many instances of thousands of mobile connections being used on a single handset came to light,’ an official informed them in this report.

According to this report, on May 9, the Central Department of Telecommunications had instructed the telecom companies to disconnect 28,220 mobile handsets. It also instructed to undergo revivification of 20 lakh SIMs used by these handsets.

In such cases, the percentage of SIMs successfully verified only 10 per cent. If you look at it, out of the 20 lakh SIMs under surveillance now. Only 10% mobile connections can be verified. Others may not be verified. That means 18 lakh mobile numbers can be disconnected.

Telecom companies will complete the re-verification of these numbers in a fortnight. After that, the unverified numbers will be disconnected,’ the officials said in the report. According to the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal, people lost Rs 10,319 crore to online financial fraud in 2023. It is known that nearly seven lakh complaints were registered that year.
