T20 World Cup 2024: ICC clarification on venue change

The T20 World Cup 2024 will be the 9th edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. It is scheduled to be played from June to July 2023 in the United States and the West Indies. T20 World Cup 2024: ICC clarification on Venue change.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have stated that there is no consideration to relocate next year’s Twenty20 World Cup from the Caribbean islands and the United States to the United Kingdom.

There will be 20 teams participating in the T20 World Cup 2024. These 20 qualified teams will be divided into five groups, and two teams from each group will advance to the Super 8 round of the tournament. In the Super 8, teams will again be divided into 2 groups, and 2 teams from each group will make the semi-finals.

Top 8 teams in the T20 World Cup Points Table automatically qualify for the T20 World Cup in 2024.

Netherlands

Host teams West Indies and United States also automatically qualify. The eight remaining teams will be qualified via the ICC qualifier matches.

Africa Qualifier – 2 teams

East Asia-Pacific Qualifier – 1 team

Europe Qualifier – 2 teams

The 2007 50-over World Cup in the Caribbean, for the record, had proved to be a financial disaster given prime-time watching hours and India’s early exit from the tournament had only made things worse.

Almost 16 years later, with business valuations getting that much steeper, the broadcaster of an ICC event will want the tournament to cater to Indian prime time as much as possible.

“The four-year rights for the India market alone were sold at US$3b. That’s way too much money to not get your priorities right,” say those in the know.
