Messi skips competitive football during India visit due to Rs 8000 crore insurance clause
New Delhi: Global football icon Lionel Messi is on a three-day visit to India, drawing massive attention from fans across the country. The Argentine superstar arrived in India on Saturday and completed visits to Kolkata, Hyderabad and Mumbai. He is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi before returning to his home country.
While Messi’s presence has sparked celebrations among Indian football fans, many have expressed disappointment that the 38-year-old legend did not play even a single competitive football match during his India tour. However, there is a specific and significant reason behind his decision to stay off the pitch.
According to sources, Messi did not participate in any club or exhibition match in India due to a unique and extremely high-value insurance policy taken on his left leg. Messi is believed to hold one of the most expensive sports insurance policies in the world, with his left leg insured for a staggering $900 million — roughly ₹8,000 crore.
This insurance policy is designed to compensate for any financial loss if Messi suffers a serious injury that could affect his playing career. However, the coverage applies strictly under defined conditions.
The policy is valid only when Messi is playing official matches for his club or his national team. If he plays a match outside these sanctioned competitions — especially in a foreign country unrelated to his club or national duties — the insurance does not cover any injury sustained.
Because of this limitation, Messi reportedly avoided playing any football match during his India visit, despite strong fan demand and widespread anticipation. Any injury sustained during a friendly or exhibition game in India could have exposed him to massive financial and professional risk without insurance protection.
Messi currently plays in Major League Soccer (MLS) for Inter Miami and continues to represent Argentina at the international level. With a demanding schedule ahead and his career entering its final phase, safeguarding his physical condition remains a top priority for both the player and his management.
During his India tour, Messi participated in cultural events, fan interactions and promotional engagements, receiving an overwhelming response from supporters. His visit triggered “Messi mania” across cities, with fans gathering in large numbers just to catch a glimpse of the football great.
Although fans were disappointed by his absence on the field, many acknowledged the practical constraints behind the decision. Messi’s visit, even without a match, has reignited discussions about football’s growing popularity in India and the possibility of hosting global football stars in the future under suitable sporting frameworks.
For now, Messi’s India trip remains memorable — not for goals or assists, but for the excitement and inspiration his presence brought to millions of football lovers across the country.
